## What ZRO is

ZRO is the native token of **LayerZero**, an omnichain interoperability protocol for cross-chain message passing and asset transfers, built by LayerZero Labs [DOC-5] [[21]](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/layerzero/) [[23]](https://www.coinrank.io/learn/what-is-layerzero-zro-how-it-works/). It functions as the governance token, with holders controlling fee switches via on-chain voting and a burn mechanism that reduces supply over time [[23]](https://www.coinrank.io/learn/what-is-layerzero-zro-how-it-works/). The "ZRO-USD" pair simply means ZRO priced in US dollars [background]. At the snapshot date, CMC lists a live price of ~$2.03, up roughly 8.76% in 24 hours, with a circulating supply of ~402M ZRO against a 1B max supply [[21]](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/layerzero/). Note a data discrepancy on ranking: our own market-data snapshot placed ZRO at rank #93, while CoinMarketCap shows it at #73 with an ~$817M market cap [[21]](https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/layerzero/) — I cannot reconcile the two from the available material.
