ALGO-USD: What It Is

ALGO-USD refers to Algorand's native token, ALGO, priced in US dollars; the "-USD" is the quote currency of the trading pair, not part of the coin's name [18],[20]. Algorand is a proof-of-stake Layer-1 blockchain founded in 2017 by MIT professor and Turing Award winner Silvio Micali, launching mainnet in June 2019 [18],[25]. It uses Pure Proof-of-Stake (PPoS) consensus with sub-second finality, fees under $0.001, and claims zero downtime and zero forks since launch [17],[27]. ALGO is used to pay gas fees, secure the network, participate in governance, and fund ecosystem incentives [28].
